Natural Face Cleanser: a Guest Review
"Jesus, is that shit slimy or what!" she exclaimed. I wonder if she curses when she is teaching language arts at the elementary school. "As for taking off makeup, well, it wouldn't remove a booger." That, my kittens, is what I call a guest review.

Great Natural Foundation and Blush by Korres
(Image above, Sephora)Hello and Happy September, kittens! Just wanted to check in and tell you about my latest favorite natural makeup! First, however, I have to apologize for not posting recently on Organic Orgy. I've been working on the Kitty Mothership, as well as my two other blogs, Zen of Homekeeping and Shin-digs and Soirees (check my profile if you'd like to take a look).
Korres is a fabulous natural makeup brand. In the words of Sephora, "The goal of Korres was simple: To develop affordable skin, hair, and personal care products using essential oils, high quality herbs, and plant extracts, and to deliver safe and beneficial results without making false promises or using synthetic ingredients." Synthetic ingredients like yucky mineral oils, silicone, and other nasty chemicals are verboten.
Basically, if it says "Korres" on the bottle, I will use it. My favorite products include: Ginger and Vitamins SPF 10 Foundation (which is fresh, dewy, and seamlessly blendable), Korres blush (available in great neutral, modern colors), and Milk Proteins 3 in 1 Cleanser. These are all available at Sephora, including the local "convenience" counters inside Indy-area JC Penneys. Think I'll pop in later this afternoon to try out some of the eye shadows and mascara!

Everything's Coming Up Roses... and Vanilla!

Hello, kittens. I've been remiss in posting my adventures in green cosmetology for you; I've had house guests who don't dig the blogosphere as much as we all do! I've missed you all and thought of you often as I stole moments at my Mac, but I never managed enough time to post anything other than comments on others' blogs. Rest assured, I've been diligently field testing natural cosmetics for your consideration, so let's get right to it, shall we?

Get Some Arnica Lotion for Your Medicine Cabinet

I was first introduced to Arnica by my massage therapist, Amy. I bruise easily and I'm pretty much always inflamed in one muscle or another. Topically applied arnica acts as an anti-inflammatory and assists healing processes by facilitating transport of blood and fluid. Its thymol derivatives have been clinically shown to be good vasodilators of blood capillaries.
In other words, it speeds healing by "breaking up" bruises and adhesions by enhancing circulation. A relative of sunflowers, arnica roots have been harvested for centuries for their medicinal properties.
I'm thrilled to see it bottled up by one of my favorite natural brands, Jurlique. In fact, I'm so sure of its quality, efficacy and eco-friendliness that I'm ordering it right now.
Football season is just around the corner, and this is just what I'll need for Little Man!
During the summer and fall, when he is playing hard and taking lots of hits, I also use Dr. Hauschka arnica compresses inside his ankle wraps! I’ve used various homeopathic preparations with arnica, but they often contain ingredients I don’t love so much, like parabens (perish the thought). I’m hoping this Jurlique lotion will emerge as the ultimate muscle rub! I’ll let you know!

Great Natural Brands With Not-So-Great Products
Instead, I got an itchy, burning, cakey effect that dried on my eyelids somewhat like school glue. My eyes felt sticky when I blinked, and this crap made my lids look like puffy fish scales! Don’t waste your money on this eye makeup...." Please click here for the full double-scoop! Meow!

Boscia Bombed With This Breakout Treatment
I love Boscia. It's preservative free (made in a sterile facility and packaged in ways not conducive to festering bacteria) and botanically-based. It never smells gross, and their cleansers are amazing for my uber-sensitive skin.Saturday, May 9, 2009

I Love Dr. Hauschka
Dr. Hauschka is without a doubt my favorite natural cosmetics brand, and the Moisturizing Day Cream is my favorite product. It smells like the Portland Rose Garden and is light and non-greasy. No disgusting ingredients. Its only downside is its price, but a little goes a long way and the bottle lasts about three months. It's glass, so it recycles easily.Thursday, April 23, 2009
Sustainable Body Scrubs: What Are You Rinsing Down the Drain?
Although I have banned all toxic cleaning agents from our home and changed all of my personal products to paraben-free formulas, I still employ a certain few commerical-grade beauty products in my arsenal. One is a delightful pedicure cream I use when I can’t get over to the neighborhood nail shop.
“So what?” I think, “It has a couple of synthetic ingredients. I’m only hurting myself,” I reason as I scrub my heels vigorously. Turns out I’m wrong about that. I’m not just hurting myself by slathering up with gross chemicals, I’m encroaching on the planet and countless animals, too!
Recently, I was perusing Slate online when I got a rude awakening about my own consumption. Great. One more negative consequence of my enslavement to beauty products and my own vanity: plastic exfoliating beads in my favorite scrubs and washes are obviously not biodegradable! Duh?
I’m ashamed of myself, and from here on out, I am only using pumice, a metal cheese-grater thingy, and sugar crystals for buffing in my home spa routines. (I’ll let you know how it’s going, and I would love your suggestions).
While plastic beads glide like nobody’s business, and slough like a mug, the little bits of nanotechnology get washed down the drain along with the suds.
These particles are showing up in the ecosystem, seriously harming other living things and polluting waterways. Yuck!
Solutions are within reach, however....to read the rest of this post, please click here!

Do You Know What You're Slathering On Your Largest Organ?
Your skin isn’t simply a sheath holding in your guts and bones; it’s an organ itself. As evidenced by certain birth control methods and hormone replacement creams, or nicotine patches, your skin can absorb strong chemicals (beneficial and toxic) that have significant reactions in the body once they enter the bloodstream.
Eliminating unnatural petrochemicals, harsh preservatives, and estrogenic compounds can have profound and immediate effects on your skin, and even your entire body. For example, switching to fragrance free formulas eliminates noxious chemicals like formaldehyde (used to fix fragrances), and may alleviate allergies and headaches.
When I stopped buying the dryer sheets I’ve used since I started doing laundry (because they were the same brand my mother uses), I got rid of chronic headaches I’ve had for years. The skin on my arms stopped the itching I’ve had since childhood when I got rid of my mother’s old standby detergent, as well.
Despite my addictive use of hair color, my scalp and hairline aren’t burned up and broken down now that I have outlawed parabens and sulfates in all hair products in the house. In short, the entire family has healthier skin, but learning about the ingredients in cosmetics and soaps can be a full-time project.
Thankfully, the brilliant broads at Organic Divas have done the homework for you, even creating a little cheat sheet you can carry in your purse. If you really want to take your understanding to the next level, go straight to Skin Deep, the Environmental Working Group’s ginormous database. You can access the ingredients and safety ratings for virtually every beauty product on the market, including sunscreens.
So what are you slathering onto your skin? Mineral oils, petroleum products, plastics, stuff that goes into antifreeze? The chances are Yes! if your routine includes many old American favorites. Now is the time to reevaluate and question the safety and purity of everything you put on and into your body.
When you’re on vacation, do you look forward to a nice, relaxing facial at your resort’s spa? Before you book appointments, research the facility’s lines, and possibly be prepared to bring your own healthy alternatives for the facialist to use. On my last trip, I checked into a spa, received the world’s worst facial rubdown, was charged triple what the service was worth, and later broke out with rashes and pimples that I’m still battling a month later!
I should have known better. For months, nothing but pure, natural, organic products have touched my skin. When I came off the facialist’s table, I took a look at her arsenal. A no-name brand, seemingly one step up from generic. Two different kinds of parabens. And then there was the Hexyl blah, blah, blah. Nothing I could discern but alcohol and glycerine. Impure, cheap crap loaded with preservatives in just one of several products this so-called “skin care expert” used on my face. Hello 100 zits and red rashes.
Conversely, some spas (usually large franchises such as Relache Day Spas in Gaylord Hotels) offer organic products from natural brands like Eminence, and the services actually nourish and repair the skin. If you’re really lucky, your journey will take you someplace home to a Dr. Hauschka Day Spa!
For other services like exfoliation, refuse unsanitary pedicure razors and scrubs with plastic beads that can scratch the skin and damage our waterways when rinsed down the drain.
